Being a stay at home mom is great. But there are days when it’s just not fun. And can I be honest? It ain’t cheap either.
You don’t have any extra income you’re bringing in to help pay the bills or adults to interact with on a day-to-day basis.
So how do you manage to keep yourself from being bored AND broke while you’re at home all day with your little ones?
You find a fun hobby that will also help you make money on the side!
Imagine making EXTRA money doing something you LOVE while the kids are sleeping or whenever boredom strikes — it’s a perfect win-win situation that I’m sure will help your sanity and your finances a LOT!
Finding a hobby
There are all kinds of hobbies for stay at home moms out there that are both frugal and flexible enough for your busy schedule. If you don’t have a hobby or know what you’re passionate about, I suggest you start by asking yourself these three questions:
- If I could read five books on any topic without ever getting bored, what topic would that be?
- If I could work the same job for five years and never get paid, what job would that be?
- lf I had the entire day to myself (no kiddos or hubby), what would I do?
When you answer these questions honestly, and without thinking about your kids or other responsibilities, your passion or hobby will stick out to you immediately. Even if your favorite thing to do is watch back-to-back episodes of Fixer Upper – you can still to go from a couch potato to a DIY-er and make money!
But if you’re stuck and need ideas, today I’ll be sharing my favorite hobbies for stay at home moms that will help you make money on the side! You could make an extra $100 or $1,000 a month from these side gigs and love what you do at the same time!
So without further ado, let’s get started.
If you love taking photos of your kids, I suggest you invest in a good camera (this is the same one I have!) so you won’t have to worry about hiring a photographer again!
Once my camera arrived, I watched a ton of beginner-friendly photography YouTube videos, took my kids to the park, and started snapping away. I wasn’t expecting to love photography, but I do! I started sharing their pics that I took on social media and before I knew it other moms wanted me to take pics of their kiddos.
I promise you don’t need to be techy or a genius to know how to work a professional camera. With a little practice (and watching YouTube!), you’ll feel like a pro in no time. Then you can book photo sessions for a fee or sell your photos online.
2. Browse the Web
I know you have a smartphone mama! And you’re probably on it right now reading this article.
You can start earning cash when you use Swagbucks to browse the web, shop online, play games, answer surveys, and so much more! Swagbucks is free and easy to use.
You’ll get free gift cards, cash, and rewards for doing things you already do from your smartphone! You can click here to sign up for Swagbucks for free!
3. Share Your Voice
You can start getting paid to share your opinion about your favorite products and services you’re already using. There are many companies that will pay for this kind of feedback. My favorite survey companies I suggest you join for extra money are Survey Junkie, Inbox Dollars, Swagbucks, and Harris Poll Online.
The best part about earning money for testing new products and answering surveys is that you can do it whenever it best fits your schedule! You can also learn more about paid survey opportunities here.
4. Write About What You Know
I love to write because it’s such a creative way to express your thoughts, feelings, and reconnect with yourself, and others – in fact, that’s the reason I started this blog!
Plus, writing can lead to many lucrative stay-at-home jobs!
For example, you can start freelance writing for other blogs and websites and make money without leaving your couch. Or you can start a blog of your own writing about topics you already know (like food, parenting, fashion, homeschooling, DIY, etc.)!
And you don’t need any previous writing experience to become a mom blogger or a freelance writer.
5. Crocheting & Crafts
Learn to get really good with a sewing machine or a crochet needle, and you’ll save money on clothes, blankets, scarves, and so much more.
And then, you can turn your new hobby skills into a side hustle that makes you money by selling your handmade crafts on Esty, eBay, Facebook Marketplace, and more!
You could also make your own Pinterest crafts or Chip & Joanna Gaines farmhouse decor pieces that inspire you to sell for profit online and around town. The possibilities are endless.
Unless you’re already a fitness junkie, then you’ll know as a mom it is HARD to take care of yourself. (Exercise? Who has time for that?!)
But if you’ve been wanting to make a few lifestyle changes, it’s never too late to reclaim your health. Nowadays, you don’t even need an expensive gym membership!
You can workout right at home (thanks to YouTube!) for FREE!
Plus, once you’ve reached your own fitness goals, you can run fitness classes in your area for other moms!
You can start trying new recipes you find online and on Pinterest. Or, you can sign up for cooking classes in your area.
Before you know it, you’ll be cooking like Rachael Ray and know how to sneak veggies in your kids’ meals without them tasting any difference (haha!).
Then, when you want to make a little extra money, you can sell your dishes (or desserts!) to your friends, family, and around your neighborhood.
Finding a money-making hobby that you can do while you’re at home with your kids can make a HUGE difference in your day-to-day life and your bank account. So trust me when I say, this season of motherhood will pass and you won’t be so bored and broke forever!
Give a few (or all!) of these ideas a try until you can find something you love!
